Just a thought...
I'm quite frustrated with the results of most of the students who sat for the GCE O Level Exams last year from my school.. well, though I only taught 1 class, but the other classes were not performing their best. Hmm.. a lot of academic programmes were given to them just to improve their credits.. but somehow this so-called get-your-credits are only working for those who are really very good in their studies.. I'm not saying that I don't agree with this programme but it just doesn't work that well. How can we improve the results? There will be a new batch of students who will undergo this programme again this year and I just hope that students and teachers cooperate and give full support and committment towards the success of it.. otherwise, it is just like all those programmes that have been set by the higher authorities.. well, you know...hmm... I'm really sad that not many of our teachers are giving full support to students who are below average, and I know that I was given those classes as well. I know their capabilities and I did help them achieve credits and passes. I'm really glad that those who achieved credits are those who have put in a lot of effort in their work especially in class and their homework.. and I'm also very glad that those students were those that I targetted to get credits.. well, my predictions are almost correct!! Alhamdulillah.. Last time, when I was asked to give my predictions on the number of students who will get credits and passes, I had to look into their efforts and achievements in class, tests and homework. It is quite easy to predict as I had more than 5 years experience teaching in secondary 5 compared to only 1 year teaching in secondary 4.. huh.. yeah.. true.. Most of the time I was given secondary 5 and I had to continue some other teacher's work in secondary 5 as those particular teacher was not "confident" to teach in secondary 5.. that was just so unnecessary for me as I thought that all teachers should be confident to teach their subject regardless of the levels they are given.. and that everybody was given the opportunity to study MOT while they were in the university. I guess that was no excuse for not wanting to teach secondary 5.
All I can say is that "you will never feel the excitement and frustration of being a good or worse teacher, if you have never taught students in secondary 5, as students in secondary 5 will determine how good you are as a teacher.. in which you are preparing them for a Real Competition, i.e. your own competition, in fulfilling your secondary 5 students' dreams and goals to go further and be somebody in the future!!"
It is true. I've felt it since I started teaching secondary 5 in 2002.. in which I was given the opportunity to teach Mathematics and Additional Mathematics to my own students whom I taught from secondary 1 till secondary 5. Alhamdulillah.. one of them is already a teacher, and a few more will be teachers, while some are already working. The feeling is really good and I'm really glad to have taught these students.
That was few years back... and it is very different nowadays.. the students are too dependent.. not much effort comes from the students while the teachers are too overworked just to make students do their work, otherwise students refuse to put in their own effort to improve. Moreover, nowadays, students do not know how to manage their time between study and leisure. Who is to be blamed? Well, teachers give motivation for students to organise their study time, but it is the students themselves who need to manage and prioritise as to which ones are important and what is not. So, teachers are not to be blamed for all those unnecessary "U"s in their exam result slips. Students are the ones who are sitting in the examination hall and should be prepared with all the necessary knowledge that each teacher has taught to get them to do well in the examinations. How about their study time at home? Are the students really studying in their rooms?? Do parents know what these students are doing at their study desk..? Studying..? or Chatting..? or playing games..? Have they done their homework? Are they really revising? Hmm.. Besides studying in school, students should also be revising at home.. organise a study timetable and devise a plan on how to study smart while having some rest and a bit of entertainment or leisure. Study Smart, Prioritise, and Make wise decisions in your planning.
Oh well... just a thought..
